Big Day 1 – 2025

It wasn’t just the sunshine that was stunning for our first Big Day Out of 2025, the Burswood Parklands were shining just as brightly!

We kicked off BDO1 with an Amazing Race, run by Great Race Australia and done the LYF way.

Not only did we cover thousands upon thousands of steps for the day, exploring and racing from point to point against the picturesque background of Optus stadium, our teams of mentors and teens also completed in challenges, solved puzzles and laughed along the way!

From snapping photos with airplanes in the background to capturing team members mid-jump and spelling words with sticks, this Amazing Race pushed our teams physically, mentally, and strengthened their connections.

The challenges also included:

  • The Drop the Egg Challenge: Given only a hand full of materials to use, groups had to brain storm together and then build a contraction to be able to drop an egg, and ensure it didn’t break! Impressively, most groups managed to keep their eggs intact! 🥚✨

  • Dance-Off: Everyone got grooving, burning up some energy and busting out the Macarena on the Matagarup bridge (Macarena on Matagraup… try saying that 10 times fast!)  💃🕺

  • Body Spelling: Teams twisted and turned to spell words with their bodies, while the results may need a bit of creativity to decipher, the laughter and fun had was clear as day!

  • Flags of the World: Brains were switched into gear and geography skills put to the test, matching the printed flags with the countries they belong too.

The steps kept stacking up, but the laughter never stopped as we made our way around the beautiful Burswood grounds.

It wasn’t just about the challenges, it was about the connections. Seeing mentors and teens cheer each other on, laugh through tricky moments, and celebrate small wins was what made the day so special.

After all that running and a morning full of excitement, we regrouped at home base (a beautiful, shaded spot between The Camfield and the swan river) for a well-earned BBQ lunch.

The playground was buzzing with activity, laughter, and a sneaky trip or two to the nearby ice cream van. 🍦

With full bellies, we headed into the afternoon activities which saw mentors and teens come together for an all-in game of Pictionary. The creativity was contagious, with plenty of shared laughs, some impressive artistic skills and some even more hilariously questionable drawing skills on display!

It was the perfect way to wind down and reconnect before heading home.

BDO1 was more than just a day out, it was a reminder of the strength of the LYF community and the joy of shared experiences.

It reminds us why LYF exists: to create spaces for positive memories, connection, and growth.

To our mentors, teens, and everyone behind the scenes: you made BDO1 unforgettable!

Here’s to more sunny days, big laughs, and unbreakable eggs in the future.
