Supporting Our Volunteers to Support Our Teens: Mental Health First Aid at LYF

At Leading Youth Forward (LYF), we know that empowering young people begins with supporting the incredible volunteer mentors who make our Perth programs possible.

That’s why we’re so proud to have recently hosted Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training for some of our volunteers. This initiative reflects our commitment to equipping mentors with the skills to step up for their own well-being, their peers, and, most importantly, the teens in our program.

Why Mental Health First Aid Matters?

Mental Health First Aid is a globally recognized training program designed to teach people how to identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental health challenges.

Much like physical first aid, MHFA empowers individuals to provide initial support until professional help can be accessed.

Our volunteers learnt practical skills, including how to approach someone who may be struggling, offer a listening ear, and guide them toward additional resources.

For our LYF mentors, this training is a game-changer. With 1 in 5 young Australians experiencing mental health challenges each year, having mentors who can recognize the signs and provide support is invaluable. It ensures that our teens feel seen, heard, and valued in a safe and supportive environment.

Backing Our Volunteers to Back Our Teens

At LYF, we’re all about creating a culture where everyone – mentors and teens alike – feels supported.

By hosting MHFA training, we’re not only equipping our mentors with tools to care for others but also empowering them to look after their own mental health and that of their friends, family, and fellow volunteers.

Here’s how MHFA training is making an impact:

  • For mentors: They gain confidence in navigating tough conversations, recognizing signs of mental health issues, and connecting people to professional help when needed.
  • For young people: They experience a stronger sense of belonging, knowing they have mentors who genuinely understand and care for their well-being.
  • For the LYF community: It fosters a culture of empathy, resilience, and mutual support, creating a ripple effect of care that touches everyone involved.

Building a Stronger Community Together

Our mission at LYF is to create lasting change for at-risk teens through long-term mentoring and unforgettable experiences. But we know we can’t do it alone. Supporting our mentors is key to achieving this mission. By offering programs like MHFA training, we’re ensuring our volunteers feel equipped, valued, and ready to make a difference.

We’re incredibly grateful for our mentors and the time they dedicate to changing young lives. Their passion, dedication, and willingness to grow inspire us every day. Together, we’re building a stronger, more supportive community where every teen can thrive.
